Degree Programs

Teaching is one of the most important jobs anyone can have. Learning to be the best teacher you can be is vital. Teaching requires knowledge, structure, creativity, innovation, skill, and the unique perspective each individual teacher possesses.  To be the best, you must have a passion for leading others to become their best.  Faulkner University’s College of Education is designed to prepare its students to be highly qualified and dedicated practitioners.

UNDERGRADUATE

B.S. in Elementary Education

The primary purpose of the elementary education major is to provide a candidate with sufficient knowledge in areas of study that are considered important in teaching children. Graduates who complete the prescribed program as mentioned above are qualified to receive the Alabama Class B Teaching Certificate. Candidates take fifty-eight (58) semester hours in the University’s core curriculum, twenty-seven (27) semester hours of professional education studies, and thirty-six (36) hours in the early childhood major field areas. In the professional and teaching field courses, there are many opportunities to work with children in diverse placements in schools in the tri-county area.

Bachelor of Music Education (BME) - Choral Track

A degree in music education will prepare the student with knowledge in the core areas of music including music theory, sight-singing and ear-training, music history, conducting, and performance skills. Additionally, this degree includes the educational requirements for the state of Alabama Class B Professional Educator Certificate (additional requirements apply). This degree is designed especially for those who are interested in teaching elementary/general, middle school, or high school music (grades PreK-12). As with all degrees at Faulkner University, this degree is taught from a Christian worldview. This prepares educators to teach and guide using biblical principles, while also understanding and appreciating the freedom and diversity integral to public education.

The B.S. in Social Science Secondary Education prepares students to teach history, government, economics, and related social sciences (grades 6–12) through comprehensive study of human systems, psychology, political science, history, economics, and geography. The Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction is an online graduate program designed to help educators develop advanced competencies in instructional strategies, student development, diversity, classroom management, assessment, and professional collaboration. While the program provides a graduate degree rather than Alabama teacher certification, it equips candidates to enhance their instructional practice and, with an appropriate concentration area, pursue eligibility for advanced pay through the Alabama State Department of Education.

Provisional Certificate in a Teaching Field

The ONLINE Provisional Certificate in a Teaching Field at Faulkner University is for those who have earned a bachelor’s degree or higher and wish to be certified to teach in Alabama. Please note that you must be hired by a school system to pursue the PCTF.
