Sept. 8

The Faulkner athletic department has contracted with STRETCH Internet, one of the industry leaders in live audio streaming, to bring Eagle sports broadcasts into the homes of family, friends and supporters all over the world.

All of Faulkner’s football games will be broadcast, as well as the Eagles’ men’s and women’s basketball games. The relationship with STRETCH Internet will also allow Faulkner to broadcast other selected events throughout the athletic year, such as volleyball matches, men’s and women’s soccer matches, as well as softball and baseball games. There is no charge for listening.

"This is a great step in what we’re wanting to accomplish multimedia-wise in our athletic department," said Doug Amos, the assistant athletic director for media relations and marketing, and the lead announcer on Faulkner’s broadcasts. "We’re starting with audio this year, and then will move into video opportunities at our events next year. We feel that this will be a nice complement to our Faulkner This Week television show."

The first internet broadcast will be Saturday, when the Eagles open their football season hosting Birmingham Southern at Cramton Bowl. The game kicks off at 11 a.m. On each home football game Saturday, Amos will host FAULKNER GAMEDAY, a one-hour tailgate show that will include scores from other games, special guests and a glance at campus events. The first FAULKNER GAMEDAY will air from 9:30 to 10:30 Saturday morning, with the pre-game show beginning at 10:45, leading up to the kickoff of the Eagles-Panthers game.

The link for all of Faulkner’s broadcasts may be found on the athletics homepage and on the main page of any program that is scheduled to have a broadcast. Just hit the STRETCH Internet button to be linked to Faulkner’s portal, which will include the complete football season schedule. Other sports schedules will be added soon. The broadcasts will also be available for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch users.

"One thing we’re excited about is the archived audio feature," Amos said. "This will allow anyone, such as family members, coaches or even players, to go back and listen to the game at a later time. And all of our broadcasts will be made available on CD as well. All of us in the athletic department are extremely excited about STRETCH Internet and what we hope will be a long-lasting relationship."

Rodrigo Pontes heads the ball toward the goal in the second half

"We got off to a slow start, but I’m happy with the way play progressed," said head coach Brett Mitchell. "We shortened our bench because of our junior varsity game tonight so we didn’t get our guys a lot of rest like we usually do. They hung in there though and we got the win."

Kevin Saxby had five saves for Faulkner and a tremendous block on a penalty kick in the first half. He allowed only one goal in the win.

The Lady Eagle’s have competed in five games in just nine days and the physical toll became evident by the second half. The team was relentless however, and fought to the final whistle.

"The girls are clearly exhausted," said head coach Jeff Ireland. "But they gave everything they had. Delta State fought hard too, but we were were able to take the goal in the final seconds to get the victory. I’m really proud of how they played and didn’t give up, but I still feel we have a tremendous amount of work to do before we hit the thick of our schedule."

The Lady Eagles pressed hard and often in the first overtime, but failed to connect with the target. The Falcons made a few runs as well, but left the field scoreless after the first extra period. Faulkner's defense held strong early in the second overtime and a well-placed pass provided Samantha Ruddick an opportunity for a breakaway on the goal. The Falcon defense stopped the assault, but left Faulkner with a corner kick. Ruddink arched the ball into a pool of blue and purple and Wilcox's header found the back of the net.

This shot, and the follow-up, are both near misses

"This is a huge win for us," said head coach Jeff Ireland. "Our girls fought hard all weekend and it really showed today."

The Lady Eagles ousted conference rival Brewton-Parker 4-0 yesterday, but lost a key player in the process. Sophomore midfielder Clio Rennalls broke her ankle in the contest, leaving the Eagles’ offense shorthanded this afternoon.
