Alternative Dispute Resolution Certificate
Faulkner Law offers a Certificate in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) to its law students. The certificate program’s course work teaches knowledge and skills across the ADR spectrum, empowers students to identify various dispute resolution options for clients and equips students to mediate basic civil disputes and draft mediated settlement agreements.
Required courses for the ADR Certificate
This course is a study of the principles and attendant laws governing the commercial arbitration process.
Dispute Resolution Processes
The course explores the theory and practice associated with the major non-litigated forms of dispute resolution (e.g., negotiation, mediation and arbitration).
Interviewing, Counseling and Negotiation
This course covers the interviewing and counseling of clients, developing and weighing client options and negotiating on behalf of clients.
The Mediation Clinic, which includes a minimum of twenty (20) hours of general civil mediation training, is a clinical course that requires students to co-mediate, under appropriate supervision, in Alabama District courts. This clinic meets the educational requires of the Alabama State Bar Center for Dispute Resolution for eligibility for the state mediator roster.
While students have flexibility in the sequence of completing these courses, the law school recommends that students complete the courses in the following sequence:
- Dispute Resolution Processes
- Interviewing, Counseling and Negotiation
- Mediation Clinic
