Gary Tiner

Dr. Gary Tiner is a professor of mathematics at Faulkner University.  He holds a doctorate in mathematics from the University of Rhode Island, as well as, master’s degrees in computer science from West Coast University and telecommunications from the University of Maryland.

Although his mathematical research is in the subject of extremal graph theory, he also enjoys discrete math and real analysis.  His most recent research, proving a specialized case of the tantalizing Erdos-Sos Conjecture, was published in Discrete Math in 2013.  He presented this result at the Joint Math Meetings in San Diego, as well as, at the annual meeting of the Alabama Association of College Teachers of Mathematics at Birmingham-Southern College.

Prior to arriving at Faulkner in 2008, Tiner was a software engineer.  For more than 10 years, he developed software for Navy torpedoes, and for four years, he developed graphical user interfaces for legacy character-based software systems.  Tiner spent two years in the Information System Security Organization within the National Security Agency.  He once gave a presentation to the director of the Central Intelligence Agency.

Tiner enjoys listening to music and is a huge Boston Red Sox fan.  He loves playing ping pong with his students and is an avid coin collector.

“I love that Faulkner is a Christian University.  It is a blessing to daily interact with like-minded, Bible-believing students, faculty and staff.  There is an awesome ‘family feeling’ here at Faulkner.”
