Honduras Map & Mission Point

Honduras is in Central America south of Guatemala and north of Nicaragua. The mission group was based on the coast of Honduras near the town of Trujillo where the church has a camp setup. The team worked with Mission del Caribe which had been highly involved in the work in Honduras prior to the hurricane and was very much a part of providing relief in the aftermath of the devastation. Our area of work was in the Colon and Olancho areas.

Some facts about Honduras

Honduras is about the size of Tennessee.  An area of wetlands, mountains, and forest called "la moskitia" covers the lower eastern coast.  The largest pine forests in Latin America the Olancho Forest Reserve is also found in Honduras.  While Honduras is very mountainous, there are no volcanoes.  However, because of the varying nature of the landscape only about 14% of the land is suitable for cultivation.  This is ironic considering the fact that the majority of the economy of this nation is based on agriculture.  Farming employs about 60% of Hondurans.

Schooling is compulsory between the ages of 7 and 14, however, many children do not attend because they must often help the family with work.  The literacy rate is 68%.
