WELCOME, OR WELCOME BACK!

The library staff is pleased to welcome all new and returning students.  Our library’s staff, collection, and services are designed to help you with your class preparation and research needs.  The library website ( /jsl/library.asp ) provides you with useful information such as library hours, staff contacts, and of our recent library acquisitions.  The website also has links to our online catalog, our unique “Research Vortex” (click on the “Electronic Databases & Research” link), our series of informative research guides, a schedule of our popular “DataBasics” workshops, and even a link to your Faulkner email account.

LIBRARY HOURS FOR FALL SEMESTER

Regular library hours for Fall Semester are:  Sunday, 1:00 pm to 11:00 pm; Monday through Thursday, 7:30 am to 11:00 pm; Friday, 7:30 am to 9:00 pm; and Saturday, 9:00 am to 9:00 pm.  Be sure to check the library website for changes or extended hours during finals.

YOUR LIBRARY CATALOG:  KEY TO THE INFORMATION UNIVERSE

Believe it or not, before Google there was another online search tool that used in the academic setting:  the library’s online catalog!  The online catalog is alive and well – and it has been updated and upgraded to meet the demands of today’s information-savvy student.

We have improved the look and the functionality of our online catalog, which is accessible through a link on the library website and at http://innopac.faulkner.edu/search/ .  Most of the library’s holdings are cataloged, and the catalog is searchable in a variety of ways:  title; author; keyword; and combinations.  Many of the records in the catalog have links to full text databases.  And, because the law library shares the catalog with the main university library, there are both legal and many non-legal items at your fingertips!

The next time you are searching for information, save Google for later and start with the online catalog!

GET ONE-ON-ONE ASSISTANCE THROUGH OUR RESEARCH OFFICE

Personal, one-on-one research help is available from the experienced professionals in our Research Office on the first floor.  You can visit in person, call (334-386-7533), or email (JSLreference@faulkner.edu) for assistance.  A librarian or trained library student reference guide is on duty or on call 6 days a week:  8:00 am to 7:00 pm Monday through Thursday; 8:00 am to 6:00 pm Friday; and from 3:00 to 7:00 pm on Sunday.  Other times are available by appointment.

Stop by to meet us – you’ll be glad you did!

HELP US HELP YOU

With a growing student body and limited library space, everyone needs to help in keeping things conducive for researching and studying.  We ask for your cooperation in keeping the second floor (particularly the rear area) as the designated “very quiet area.”  The atrium area on the first floor near the library’s entrance is an area where talking (in a low voice, of course) is permitted.  Please remember that there should be no cell phone conversations anywhere in the library.  (And, if you are looking for a quiet area to study, you won’t want to sit near the Library Director’s office!)

Because we currently have only 3 group study rooms, it is important for students to follow the policies and procedures governing the use of these rooms.  For example, groups always have precedence over individuals, persons may not “claim” rooms by leaving their belonging, group time in a room may be limited.  For the full rundown, including reservation information, see a library staff member or check the library website at /jsl/library/groupstudy.asp and /jsl/library/policies.asp .

START OFF RIGHT WITH “DATABASICS” TO LEARN (OR REFRESH)

For new students who are eager to excel in LRW class, or returning students who want to brush up on their skills, our professional librarians have the perfect thing – our “DataBasics” workshop series.  These short small-group sessions are held in our Computer Training Lab on the first floor of the Library.  Sessions last 30 minutes or so and are very informal.  They offer you a chance to grab some knowledge or get your questions answered in a relaxed, no-pressure environment.

The schedule of DataBasics sessions will be announced shortly.  Current schedules are made available to students in several ways:  they are is posted on the library’s TWEN site (be sure to register if you haven’t already done so; the site contains lots of useful information); they are posted on the library’s website under the “Research Vortex” section; and printed copies are posted around the library.

We look forward to seeing you in a DataBasics session soon!
