JONES SCHOOL OF LAW
THE LIBRARY LINK
Vol. 2006, No. 3
August 2006
WELCOME, OR WELCOME BACK!
The library staff is pleased to welcome all new and returning students! There have been a few changes in the library over the summer (some that you may like more than others). You can read about these changes below.
Also, please remember to check the library website regularly, at: /jsl/library.asp. Our website has library hours, staff contact information, links to our electronic databases, lists of new library acquisitions, links to our helpful series of research guides, and even a link to your Faulkner email account.
New students should check out our current “website spotlight” on the library’s website. The current “spotlight” features an article that might help ease your transition to law school.
WE’VE GONE WIRELESS!
As promised, over the summer a wireless network was installed in the library and other parts of the law school. If you have a laptop with a wireless card, you can now access our growing array of online databases from any seat in the library! For instructions on connecting to the wireless network, email helpdesk@faulkner.eduor check in the library’s Research Office.
MEET OUR NEW LIBRARY STAFF MEMBERS
We are pleased to announce the addition of two new library staff members since school ended in the Spring. LeeAnn Collier is our Fiscal Assistant. She is responsible for paying our bills and helping maintain our budget. LeeAnn has a background in accounting and human resources, and should do a great job in an important position.
Gary Selby is our new Circulation Assistant. He is a Faulkner student who has worked part-time for the law library for the past several years. Gary will be working the afternoon-evening shift, so you will see a full-time staff member at the Circulation Desk until 8:00 most evenings.
Please join us in welcoming these two fine additions to our library team!
LIBRARY RESPONDS TO YOUR REQUEST FOR LONGER HOURS
During the Spring Semester the library staff asked student library users to participate in a user survey concerning library operations. (Two lucky students, Jessica Sanders and Drew Stewart, won Rave Cinema tickets in a drawing for those who completed the survey!) Several participants asked for longer library hours on weekends. We have responded to that request by extending library hours on Friday and Saturday nights until 9:00 pm. Our regular operating hours for Fall Semester will be:
Sunday, 1:00 pm to 11:00 pm
Monday through Thursday, 7:30 am to 11:00 pm
Friday, 7:30 am to 9:00 pm
Saturday, 9:00 am to 9:00 pm
PLAN YOUR PRINTING CAREFULLY AND SAVE $$$
Students using Lexis and Westlaw in the library may send unlimited print jobs to the Lexis and Westlaw printers at no charge. Effective Fall Semester, however, students no longer receive unlimited free printing on the other library laser printers. Students will receive 250 pages of printing each semester at no charge; after that, each printed page will cost 5 cents per page. Students who have incurred charges will be billed by the University Business Office twice each semester. Please be sure that all of your Westlaw and Lexis print jobs are sent to those printers. Another cost-saving alternative is to email documents to yourself and print only the pages you need.
STUDY ROOMS, NOISE, CHAIRS, AND OTHER STUDENT COMMENTS
In our user survey, students commented on a number of other issues besides library hours. Some of you wanted things to be more quiet in the library. In order to help bring noise levels down, our staff will be more active in “shushing” noisy patrons. We also ask for your cooperation in keeping the Second Floor (particularly the rear area) as our designated “very quiet area.” The atrium area near the library’s entrance will be an area where talking (in a low voice, of course) is permitted. Please remember that there should be no cell phone conversations anywhere in the library. (And, if you are looking for a quiet area to study, please don’t sit near the Library Director’s office!)
Returning students will notice that, due to the need for new faculty office space, the library has lost the group study rooms formerly located at the back of the Second Floor. We now have only 3 group study rooms. So, it is more important than ever for students to follow the policy and procedures governing the use of these rooms. See a library staff member at the Circulation Desk, or check the library website at: /jsl/library/groupstudy.asp. We have plans to add at least 2 more group study rooms, but this cannot occur until next summer. In the meantime, we ask you to be patient – this reallocation of space is part of the typical “growing pains” of a newly ABA-approved law school.
But, there is good news too – expanded, better-organized library space, and new (padded) chairs, are in the works! Planning is underway for an expansion to the law school building. We hope to see the plans drawn up during this academic year.
Speaking of suggestions, don’t forget to take advantage of the “suggestion box” in the casual reading area at the front of the library. Your constructive comments and suggestions will help us continue to improve our library.
Watch for the next issue of The Library Link!
