SPRING BREAK LIBRARY HOURS

Spring Holiday week will be here before you know it.  Library hours will be reduced during that week.  The library will be closed on Saturday March 25 and Sunday March 26.  During the week of March 27 through March 30, we will be open from 8:00 to 6:00 Monday-Thursday and 8:00 to 5:00 on Friday.  We will be closed on Saturday April 1.  Normal library operating hours resume on Sunday April 2.  (Note:  The library will be closed on Easter Sunday April 16.)

QUIET PLEASE!

Recently some students have expressed concern over the noise level in the library.  Please be courteous to fellow library patrons and keep voices down at all times.  No cell phone use is permitted in the library, so if you must take a call please step outside.  Thanks for helping!

ENHANCE YOUR SKILLS THROUGH “DATABASICS” WORKSHOPS

If you need a refresher on a research topic that’s a little unclear to you, or if you want to explore a new research horizon, check out the library’s continuing series of short, informal, small-group workshops called “Databasics.”  They are offered on the average of three times per week at different times and days, in order to make it easier for you to fit some into your schedule.

Sessions last from 30-45 minutes and are held in our Computer Training Lab on the first floor of the Library.  A calendar of this month’s Databasics sessions is posted in the library and on the library website.  Databasics sessions to be offered during March are:

ü     Searching the JSL Online Catalog – Unlock the secrets of a resource that can help you locate needed materials quickly and learn about our value-added enhancements to the catalog.  (Thursday March 2 at 2:00p)

ü     CCH Tax Research Network – Learn about this great online resource for tax issues.  Reach it from on-campus computers OR via remote access.  You’ll find this useful during “tax season.”  (Fri. March 3 at 2:00p)

ü     Westlaw Certification (Prepare to Practice) – Westlaw research skills certification is a “must” for students who want to work while in law school and are looking to distinguish themselves from the pack.  (Wed. March 3 at 11:30a, 12:30p, 5:00p, 6:00p; Thur. March 9 at 10:15a, 12:15p, 3:00p, 5:00p)

ü     Westlaw Certification (Cases) – (Wed. March 8 at 3:00p; Thur. March 9 at 11:15, 4:00p)

ü     Westlaw Certification (Statutes) – (Wed. March 8 at 4:00p; Thur. March 9 at 1:15)

ü     MPRE Exam Review – (Thur. March 9 at 5:00p, Room 151 – see details below)

ü     Journal Research Using HeinOnline – HeinOnline provides fast access imaged pages of law journals and many other resources, including international materials, from anywhere.  (Tue. March 14 at 10:00a; Wed. March 22 at 7:00p)

ü     LOISLaw – Tune into this low-cost alternative to the big commercial databases.  It has features that will really help you during the summers between semesters.  (Wed. March 15 at 6:00p; Wed. March 22 at 2:00p)

LIBRARY OFFERS MPRE REVIEW ON THURSDAY MARCH 9

Expanding the scope of our usual Databasics legal research refreshers, the library is pleased to offer a pre-MPRE review session for students who are taking the Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam.  Associate Dean for Information Resources Tim Chinaris, who was Ethics Director of the Florida Bar for many years and is very active in legal ethics circles, will meet with interested students at 5:00 pm on Thursday March 9 in Room 151.  Dean Chinaris will highlight some key areas and will be available to answer your last-minute questions.  If you are grappling with a difficult topic or two, come to the session – and bring your questions!

COMPUTER LAB HELP NOW AVAILABLE DAILY

Library patrons who need some assistance in our Computer Training Lab will find that help is very nearby.  As a service to our library patrons, we have scheduled a student assistant to spend time in the Lab throughout the week.  Although specific hours will vary, typically an assistant is stationed in the Lab during the hours around noon and just as evening classes begin.

CHECK YOUR FAULKNER EMAIL VIA THE LIBRARY WEBSITE

Some JSL students are not using their Faulkner University email accounts.  Important law school and library information (including this newsletter!) is disseminated via Faulkner email, so the library staff encourages you to check your account often.  To make this easier, we’ve placed a “Check your Faulkner email here” link on the front page of our library website, which is at:

Faulkner University - Law Library

Just click on the email link and enter your University username and password (the same ones you use to access our computer network).
