GROUP STUDY ROOMS – NOW, BY RESERVATION!

With a growing student population and increased scholarly activity, there has been a growing demand for the library’s limited supply of group study rooms.  (Right now we have 6 group study rooms, but that will shrink to 3 when the faculty office area is extended next summer.)  We have responded to the demand, and to student requests, by instituting a reservation procedure.  Starting December 1, 2005, groups of 2 or more students may reserve one of our group study rooms in accordance with these procedures:

A group (i.e., 2 or more students) may reserve a group study room for a maximum of a single 2 hour time block

  • A group may reserve only one group study room for one 2-hour block per day – but a group may remain in a room beyond the 2 hour reservation period if no other group has signed up
  • To reserve a room, contact the library circulation desk in person or by telephone (386-7219) and give your name, another group member’s name, and the requested reservation time
  • Keep group study room doors closed and hold conversation to a reasonable level
  • If a group study room is left unoccupied (i.e., not occupied by at least 2 students) for 10 minutes during a reserved time block the room will be considered vacated, allowing another group to reserve the room (leaving personal effects in a room is not occupation)
  • It may be necessary to use group study rooms for administration of exams
  • Direct any questions to a member of the library staff

Thank you for your cooperation as we begin operating under these new procedures.

LIBRARY EXTENDS HOURS TO HELP DURING EXAM TIME

During Fall Semester final exam period the library will extend its hours to better serve our student patrons.  The library will open Monday-Friday at 7:00 am, from Monday December 5 through Wednesday December 14.  Additionally, the library will remain open from 6:00 to 9:00 pm on Friday December 2 and Friday December 9.  This means that the library is available to you for 97 hours per week during final exams.  But, don’t forget to get enough rest to be fresh for the test!

LIBRARY ANNOUNCES INTER-SESSION OPERATING HOURS

From Thursday December 15 through Saturday January 7, the library will be open from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday.  We will be closed Saturdays and Sundays.  Along with the rest of Faulkner University, the library will be closed from December 26 through January 2.

MEET OUR NEWEST LIBRARY STAFF MEMBER

That friendly face you see at the circulation desk belongs to our newest library staff member, Kimberly Patterson.  Avid bookworms may recognize her as a bookseller at Barnes & Noble, where she honed her customer service skills.  Kim graduated from Auburn University – Montgomery with a degree in English.  She will be helping staff our circulation desk as well as performing the vital task of keeping our collection current by filing our looseleaf and pocket part supplements.  Kim’s mother is a librarian, so we feel that she is in the right place as a member of the Jones School of Law Library staff.  Please join us in giving Kim a warm welcome!

CHECK YOUR FAULKNER EMAIL FROM THE LIBRARY WEBSITE

Librarians have noticed that a number of Jones School of Law students don’t seem to be using their Faulkner University email accounts.  Much important law school and library information (including this newsletter!) is disseminated via Faulkner email, so we want to encourage you to check your account early and often.  To make this easier, we’ve placed a “Check your Faulkner email here” link on the front page of our library website.  The library website is at:

/jsl/library.asp

Just click on the email link and enter your University username and password (the same ones you use to access our computer network).  If you have questions, please ask Marin Dell, our Electronic Services/Research Librarian (call her at 386-7138, or email her at mdell@faulkner.edu).

JOIN LAW SCHOOL FACULTY AND STAFF FOR CHRISTMAS PARTY

Before the crush of final exams turns you into Scrooge or The Grinch, grab a little Christmas cheer by attending the Third Annual Jones School of Law Christmas Party.  Bring your family and friends, including the little ones.  We’ll share food, festivities, caroling, and even a visit from the jolly old elf himself (who has a special library connection!).  The fun takes place in the law school building rotunda from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Thursday December 1.

YOUR COMMENTS ARE INVITED

You may have noticed that we’ve placed a “suggestion box” in the newspaper/magazine area at the front of the library.  Your constructive comments and suggestions will help us continue to improve our library.  Just place them in the suggestion box, or tell any library staff member.  And, during Spring Semester 2006, we plan to conduct a formal library user survey.

MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Watch for the next issue of The Library Link in 2006!
