Using Other Libraries
Although the libraries of Faulkner University should serve as your primary research facilities, there may be times when you need to utilize other libraries. (See links below)
Choosing a library
Just because a library is the closest one to your home or office does not mean that it will provide the specific materials that you need. Following these guidelines will help you to choose the library best suited to your research.
- Ask a professional librarian for suggestions. The librarians know the strengths of various libraries in the community and can find out which library would have the particular book or periodical that you need.
- Call the library you would like to use in order to determine if it has the necessary materials, what are its usage policies and hours, and the times when professional reference service is available.
Using another library effectively
- Determine where the basic service areas are: circulation, reference, books, periodicals, and photocopiers. In some larger libraries, there are reference/book/periodical areas for various subject specialties such as business, technology, and medicine. Look for a brochure with a map and a description of the services offered.
- Ask to speak with a reference librarian. The librarian will be able to determine which resources you'll need to use. Do not be afraid to ask the librarian questions concerning the use of a particular resource or about library policies. Please remember that libraries may have restrictions on the services they offer to users who are not considered their primary clientele.
Remember to pick up your Alabama Virtual Library (AVL) card at your local public library and have free access to a large number of databases and other electronic resources.
