Eagles pick up win in annual Faulkner Classic

October 19

The Faulkner University junior volleyball team earned its second win of the season Saturday afternoon against Florida Baptist College. The victory gave the team a pair of wins on the year, a first for the junior varsity program. The Eagles defeated the visitors 25-8, 25-13, 25-18.

“This was a big win for our JV program,” said head varsity coach Tori Bartels. “These girls work hard and it’s often tough to see the growth that takes place because the level of competition for the junior varsity team is so extreme.”

With so few volleyball programs in the south offering a junior varsity volleyball team the coaches have had to resort to playing junior colleges and smaller four years schools, giving the opponent the upper hand. The University of Mobile is a recent exception having added a very good junior varsity program this year.

The Eagles second win of the year came from an explosive offense lead by the Treat twins. Kasey Treat had eight kills and hit a record .800 in the match. Kayla Treat pounded home six kills hitting .667.

Anna DeRamus had seven kills (.200) and added five digs. Emily Galloway had six kills (.385) and had 21 assists and four service aces. Brittany Lebeck also had six hills and four service aces and added 3 digs.

Scottie Wilkes lead the back row with 16 digs and had three service aces.

The team also faced off against Mobile’s JV team, Southern Union and Gulf Coast Community College. The Eagles dropped those matches in three sets each, but showed significant strides in their overall play.

“I’m really proud of these girls,” said head coach Holly Hutcheson. “They’ve worked hard and we’ve implemented a  lot of new things and have moved some people around and it’s easy to see that they are getting much better.”

Faulkner University's junior varsity volleyball team hosted Jefferson Davis Community College tonight in the Tine Davis Gymnasium. The Warhawks entered the game with only two matches on the season, but the lack of play didn't slow down the visitors as they cruised to a 25-15, 25-14, 25-17 victory.

The Eagles lost some momentum in the opening set and struggled to bounce back in the second. The final set revealed a much more determined and aggressive Faulkner team as they held a lead early on. Tough serving from the Warhawks and repetitive over-passing by the Eagles however, swung the closing set in Jeff Davis' favor.

The Eagles regrouped and fought hard in the final set adding seven more kills and increased intensity on the defensive side of the ball. The Eagles are short-crewed with only eight players, but proved that if they are willing to battle on every play they can compete with some of the south's best junior colleges.
