Slugfest; Eagles rock Southern Wesleyan 8-0… again

March 22, 2008
Montgomery, Ala. – After blistering the Lady Warriors 8-0 in six innings in game one today’s doubleheader, the Eagles went back to work in game two. The outcome was the same, but this time an inning earlier. The Eagles put up six runs in the first inning and went on to an 8-0 lead in five innings.

Cheryl Lavarnway wrapped up the series for the Eagles. The senior finished struck out five consecutive batters, three in the second inning and the first two in the third. She gave up only two hits and allowed no earned runs.

The Eagles exploded in game two. The birds boasted six runs in the opening inning and rocked a double and a pair of triples. The hitting really heats up when there are two outs on the board and game two was a perfect example. With two down in the bottom of the first Courtney Barber hits an RBI double. She was soon followed by a 3-RBI triple courtesy of Eden Harris. Feeling that her demonstration at the plate might have somehow gone unnoticed, Harris snuck home on a wild pitch to give Faulkner a 6-0 lead. Not to be outdone, junior Brittany Hardmon rocked a triple herself, but the Eagles couldn’t bring her in before the third out.

In the bottom of the third Erin Pierce decided to join the triple club on her leadoff swing. Pierce then mirrored Harris and crossed home on a wild pitch making it a 7-0 game. The Eagles were quiet for a couple of innings before Kelley Murphy took home for the game winning score after a wild throw to first base.

Cynthia Batchelor was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Courtney Barber was 1-3 with an RBI. Eden Harris was 1-3 with three RBIs and Brittany Hardmon finished 2-for2 and Earin Pierce 1-for-2.

The Eagles crossed the 500 mark with the win and now sit at 16-15. The victory puts the team on a five game winning streak and atop the SSAC standings. Faulkner will travel to Mobile, Ala., on Thursday to take on Spring Hill in a doubleheader. The Eagles last faced the Badgers in the Faulkner Invitational back in February and won the contest 5-0. The series is set to begin at 1 p.m.
