Faulkner players receiver honors

ROME, Ga. - The Faulkner softball team received received the Sportsmanship Award at the Southern States Athletic Conference annual post-season awards banquet Wednesday night. The award is voted on by the league coaches, and was presented on the eve of the SSAC Tournament hosted by Shorter College.
The Eagles, who open the tournament against Shorter Thursday at 11 a.m., placed one player on the first team all-conference team - sophomore pitcher Emily Jimmerson. Faulkner's Eden Harris, a junior outfielder, and Katie Godfrey, a senior catcher, both made the second team. The Eagles' Haley Munroe was selected the all-freshmen team.
Harris was also presented the team's Champions of Character Award.

Faulkner University hosted conference rival and No. 12 Brenau University Saturday afternoon for their final series of the regular season. The Eagles swept the Golden Tigers on the road in early April and the home team was looking for a repeat performance. Brenau slide by the Eagles 1-0 in the opener however, and took the second game 5-4 in extended innings.

Emily Jimmerson (16-11) pitched a complete first game. The sophomore allowed seven hits, but gave up no earned runs and had eight strikeouts.
The Eagles struggled on offense and were able to generate only three hits. Shauna Suttle, Erin Pierce and Brittany Hardmon were all 1-for-3.

The visitors jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the second game. The Eagles responded in the third with an RBI single by Katie Godfrey and a two-RBI double from Suttle.
The Golden Tigers tied the game at three the following inning and the score held through the seventh.

An error at first by the Eagles in the top of the eight ushered in a pair runs giving Brenau a 5-3 lead. Faulkner was only able to answer with a single run in the bottom of the eighth.
Suttle finished the game 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and a scored run. Godfrey was 1-for-4 with an RBI and scored run. Cynthia Batchelor was 1-for-2 with a scored run and an RBI and Haley Munroe was 2-for-4.

Samantha Kendrick (3-5) pitched all eight innings of the second game and tallied three strikeouts while allowing seven hits and three earned runs.

Faulkner closed the regular season at 24-25 overall and 16-16 in the Southern States Athletic Conference. The team will enter the conference tournament in Rome, Ga., on Thursday, April 30. Times have yet to be announced.

Faulkner University hosted Auburn Montgomery in a conference doubleheader Friday evening. The Senators blanked the Eagles 2-0 in the opener, but Faulkner made a strong rebound for the 6-1 victory in the nightcap.

Game one was scoreless until the top of the fifth inning when AUM brought home both of the event’s only runs.
Emily Jimmerson (16-10) took control of the defense for the Eagles in game one. The sophomore tallied 11 strikeouts, while giving up nine hits and a pair of earned runs in the loss.

Faulkner’s offense was held at bay for the bulk of the opener. Eden Harris finished the game 1-for-2 and teammates Courtney Barber, Shauna Suttle and Katie Godfrey were all 1-for-3.

Game two was a different story altogether. The Eagles managed to couple strong pitching with aggressive efforts at the plate to keep the visitors out of contention.

Katy Wiggins (5-9) picked up the win giving up only four hits and no earned runs. The sophomore had seven strikeouts.

Godfrey opened fire on the Senators in the second game going 2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs. Brittany Hardmon and Haley Munroe were each 1-for-4 and added two RBIs and a solo RBI respectively. Eden Harris finished with a hit and two sacrifice bunts.
