Eagles fall to Lady Chargers in double overtime
September 21
After losing a frustrating battle with conference rival Brewton-Parker College on Tuesday, the Eagles hoped to rebound against the University of Alabama-Huntsville. The two teams battled through regulation, but the Lady Charges topped the Eagles 3-2 in double overtime.
UAH took a rapid 1-0 lead scoring just 16 minutes into regulation. Faulkner's Nikki Jagt answered just four minutes later however, when she bolted down the left flank, finding the back of the net.
The Eagles struck again five minutes later when Latoy Panton dribbled around the keeper for a goal off the assist from Cassie Wilcox.
Faulkner held the lead until late in the second period when Amber Cryer tied the contest for the Lady Chargers.
The tie was resolved in the 106th minute and the second overtime by UAH's Devin Newman.
I was very disappointed with our result, said head coach Jeff Ireland. It didn't represent how we played. We out-shot them 25-12, but still weren't able to get the win. We missed some routine goals early and that set us back. At the end of the day you have to win the game and we didn't do that.
The Eagles will return to work on Monday to make preparations for their cross-town battle with Southern States Athletic Conference titan Auburn Montgomery. The No. 20 Lady Senators are currently 5-1 overall and 1-0 in the league.
We have a tremendous amount of work to do and have spent time this weekend going over game film to correct our play, said Ireland. We'll have to be in top shape to challenge them [Auburn Montgomery].
The loss markes the second straight for the Eagles and moves them to 3-2 on the year (1-1 SSAC). Faulkner will take on Auburn Montgomery on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the YMCA fields.
