Eagles' first scrimmage ends in tie

Igor Popovich's goal puts the Eagles on the scoreboard in the first half

August 17

The men's soccer team traveled to Wallace State Community College on Saturday for its first scrimmage of the season. After a tough preseason the athletes were eager to face some outside competition.

Faulkner's roster includes several young players, including seven freshmen, and the inexperience looked like it might be an issue as Wallace scored a pair of goals before 10 minutes had ticked off the clock.

The Eagles bounced back however, and they slowly started to take control of the first half creating several scoring opportunities. Finally, after a goalmouth scramble, the Eagles got on the scoreboard with a solid shot by junior midfielder Igor Popovich. Before the half ended the Eagles tied the event with a brilliant corner-kick headed in by freshman center-back Munashe Boriwondo.

The second half featured several scoring opportunities by both teams, but neither could break the tie. Goalkeeper Austin White shook off the two early goals and came up with some quality saves to preserve the tie.

“It was a decent showing for these young guys,” head coach Brett Mitchell said. “We still got some work to do though.”

The junior varsity squad will travel to Pearl River Community College on Aug. 21, while the varsity team takes on Concordia in Selma on Aug. 22.
