Faulkner to host open tryouts in February
Faulkner's men's soccer program will be holding open tryouts for the 2010 season on Saturday, Feb. 27. The tryouts will begin at 9 a.m. For more information about the tryout and to register, please conteact head coach Brett Mitchell by phone at 334-386-7162 or by email at bmitchell@faulkner.edu.

Boriwondo, Pontes earn top conference honors

Faulkner’s Munashe Boriwondo and Rodrigo Pontes took home top Southern States Athletic Conference honors this week. The pair of freshmen helped lead the Eagles to their most successful season to date.

Munashe Boriwondo is named SSAC first team all-conference
Boriwondo was named first team all-conference for season and Pontes received second team honors. These are the first all-conference awards for the men’s soccer program. Boriwondo was also selected as Faulkner’s Champions of Character recipient for 2009.

Rodrigo Pontes takes home SSAC second team all-conference honors
The entire varsity team was also received recognition from the SSAC. Faulkner was named the recipient of the 2009 Best Sportsmanship Award. The awards is voted on by coaches in the conference for the team that exhibits the best sportsmanship both on and off the field. The annual Sportsmanship Award began last season and the men’s soccer team is the first male athletic program at Faulkner to receive the honor.
The Eagles closed out the season with their year end banquet this week. The coaches presented team awards to several players. Boriwondo was recognized as the Champions of Character recipient with senior Joey Gorman, last year’s recipient, being named the runner-up.
The Most Improved award went to senior Tyler Dunaway. Freshman Sidney Jent was the runner-up.
Boriwondo also took home the Most Valuable Player award and junior Igor Popovich was named as the runner-up.
The team also bid farewell to six seniors. Dunaway and Gorman along with Trent Dotson, Ale Padoveze, Manuel Zapata, Jeffrey Porter all finished their final season of play this fall. Long-time assistant coach Bruno Resende also gathered with the team for the last time. The five-year coach has been a pivotal part of the program’s growth and success.
Head coach Brett Mitchell and assistant Glenn Townsend will now turn their attention to recruiting for the 2010 season.
