Chinoski named starter at QB

Redshirt freshman Frank Chinoski has been named Faulkner's starting quarterback, head coach Jim Nichols announced after Monday's practice. Chinoski edged sophomore Chad Kilgore for the starting role.

"Both quarterbacks really had great camps,'' Nichols said. "Frank was here with us through the spring and summer, and he's just more ready to help us right now. And he is the unquestioned leader of this football team.''

Nichols added that Chinoski and Kilgore will get the majority of the reps in practice from this point forward, and that both will be ready to play on Saturdays. The Eagles open their inaugural season Sept. 1 at Pikeville (Ky.). The games kicks off at 12:30 p.m. and can be heard on WLWI-AM1440.

Faulkner will spend extensive time the rest of this week finalizing its special teams - a definite point of emphasis with Nichols in fall drills. Josh Medley and James Huff are battling for the placekicking job, while Kilgore will handle most of the punting duties.

The first-year head coach also announced that the remainder of the Eagles' preseason practices will be closed to the public. Faulkner's practices, being held at Goodwyn Junior High School, have had hundreds in attendance, including more than 600 to watch Saturday night's scrimmage.
