Eagles offense steps up in second scrimmage

Saturday, Aug. 18 - After a slow start in Wednesday night’s scrimmage the Eagles' offense came ready to play Saturday evening at Goodwyn Junior High School. Head coach Jim Nichols decided to implement more on offense and focus on correcting the shortcomings in the previous scrimmage.

"We watched a lot of film with our guys this week. We had a lot of mistakes with it being our first scrimmage," Nichols said. "They’ve come a long way in the lasts couple of practices."

That certainly proved true on the offensive side of the ball. After the defense dominated in Faulkner’s first scrimmage the offense wanted to turn things around. Though the running game struggled a bit the fist part of the evening the Eagles proved effective in the air.

Quarterbacks Frank Chinoski and Chad Kilgore both through for triple-digit yardage. Chinoski connected with receiver Greg Brass for a 43-yard reception early on and later hooked up with Jerell Williams for a 37-yard completion. He finished the night with 133 yards passing.

Kilgore also had a great evening. He threw a 21-yard strike to receiver Luther Burton to spark a drive late in the fist half and the two connected again two plays later for a 7-yard touchdown.

The defense was stingy on the ground and forced several turnovers including a fumble returned for a touchdown. In the end it was a great night on both sides of the ball.

"The offense came out and did a great job tonight and the defense is still doing well. Both coordinators have done a great job," Nichols said. "It was a great scrimmage tonight."

Nichols acknowledges that there are still many things that the team needs to work on before their season opener against Pikeville (Ky.) on Sept. 1, but insists that the coaching staff and players will rise to the challenge. "We’re only going to get better."
