Faulkner works out in shorts, prepares for Saturday's scrimmage

Thursday, Aug. 16 - The Faulkner football team spent Thursday's practice in shorts and helmets, taking the day off from contact after Wednesday night's spirited controlled crimmage.

Head coach Jim Nichols and his staff mainly worked on conditioning with their team, which is preparing for its inaugural season opener at Pikeville (Ky.) on Sept. 1.

"To be honest, I thought today would be kinda slow because of the scrimmage, but the guys came out and really worked hard,'' Nichols said. "I think we got all the sorenesss out.''

There were numerous bumps and bruises, with quarterback Frank Chinoski and safety Duron Robinson getting the worst of it. Chinoski hurt his hamstring and is day-to-day, while Robinson injured his hand. Nichols said the status of Robinson's injury was not yet known.

Faulkner will practice Friday in shorts, shoulder pads and helmets in preparation for Saturday night's scrimmage, which Nichols said will be much more like game day. The scrimmage will start at 7 at Goodwyn Junior High School and is open the public.

"We were extremely scripted Wednesday night, but it won't be like that Saturday,'' Nichols said. "We really expect a lot out of Saturday's scrimmage. We think it'll be a lot more fun for the fans to watch than was Wednesday's. I'm counting on there being a lot of big plays as we kind of take the training wheels off a little.''
