Faulkner has "great'' workout; QB starter to be named soon

Tuesday, Aug. 14 - For Faulkner head football coach Jim Nichols and his football team, what a difference a day makes. A day after their worst practice of the fall, the Eagles had one of their best workouts early Tuesday morning at Goodwyn Junior High School.

"It was a great practice, said Nichols, whose team is preparing for its inaugural game at Pikeville (Ky.) on Sept. 1. "Today the guys responded to the challenge, and really pushed themselves out there.''

Nichols was especially pleased with the play of his three quarterbacks - Frank Chinoski, Justin Wright and Chad Kilgore. All three have progressed, he said, which is one reason why a starter has yet to be named.

"I'll tell you what - I think all three have played winning football in practice,'' he said. "I would say by the end of the week we'll have a depth chart at the quarterback position.''

Nichols and his staff will conduct the first of two controlled scrimmages Wednesday night at 8:15, just after the players, coaches and support personnel get together at Tine Davis Gymnasium for "Football Church'' - a tradition started by the first-year head coach at the start of fall practice.

"Our first one should be interesting,'' said NIchols, whose Eagles will also scrimmage Saturday. "They'll get a lot of reps, and we'll be able to see who really understands what we're doing. We may have some really strong and fast guys, but they're not going to get on the field unless they know what we're doing. Wednesday night, our staff will get a good understanding of just who gets it.''

The scrimmage at Goodwyn is open to the public, just as are all Faulkner practices.
