Nichols calls Monday's workout "sluggish"

Monday, Aug. 13 - Faulkner head coach Jim Nichols called Monday's practice "sluggish'' as his Eagles continue to brave the triple-digit temperatures at Goodwyn Junior High School.

"Perhaps some of it had to do with taking yesterday off, but mostly I think it has to do with all the conditioning work we've been doing,'' Nichols said. "The guys didn't have their legs up under them the first half of the practice. The intensity did pick up during the latter part of the day, though. I didn't like at all how we started, but I was encouraged by how we finished.''

Nichols praised the work of wide receivers Jurrell Williams, Greg Brass, Douggie Farrington and Frankie Padula, who he said all showed good quickness and concentration.

"They looked good out there today, there's no question about it,'' he said. "Our quarterbacks did a good job of getting the football to them, but that doesn't matter if you don't catch the ball. Today I was impressed with what I saw.''

The Eagles continue to install their offensive and defensive systems in preparation for their opener at Pikeville (Ky.) on Sept. 1. All 149 players are currently getting reps at their respective positions, but Nichols admits soon he and his staff will begin work on a two- and three-deep depth chart.

"Right now there are a lot of rotations, and everyone is working hard,'' he said. "We're about to start cutting down on the reps and start getting these guys ready for a football game. It's less than three weeks away, and we're not even close to being ready.''

Faulkner will practice twice on Tuesday, with the 6:30 a.m. session concentrating on team drills and the 2 p.m. practice looking primarily at individual work. All Faulkner practices are open to the public.
