Eagles can't hang on to early lead
Sept. 30, 2007
Montgomery, Ala. – The Faulkner Eagles were looking to balance the win and loss columns on Saturday by improving to 2-2 on the season. Though the outcome seemed promising early on, the Eagles made some mistakes and gave up some big plays in their 35-7 loss to the Cumberland University Bulldogs.
The Eagles were in control of the game early in the first half after gaining momentum on a Bulldog turn over. On their second drive of the game Cumberland quarterback Matt Eads was hit by linebacker Sean Thom and fumbled on the Faulkner 12-yard line. Nose guard Jonathan Houston recovered the ball and took it 22 yards before being brought down. The Eagles scored on the ensuing drive and took a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter.
As the game progressed however, things began to fall apart for the Eagles. The Bulldogs managed to score on some big plays and determined drives and Faulkner’s special teams fumbling two back-to-back kickoff returns giving Cumberland possession in prime real estate. The Eagle’s played hard, but at the end of the day there were simply too many mistakes.
Faulkner hopes to rebound this Satuday as the take on Edward Waters College. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. at Cramton Bowl.
