Faulkner wraps up preparation for Huntingdon
September 11
Faulkner's final practice in preparation for Huntingdon was cut short Thursday by a driving rainstorm, but head coach Gregg Baker did have enough time to make a decision on his starting quarterback. Freshman Joe Scott, who directed the Eagles' offense in the 17-16 season-opening victory over Webber, will start against the Hawks.
"Joe won the job two weeks ago, and has done nothing to lose it in practice since then,'' said Baker, whose team practiced for little more than an hour in shoulder pads and helmets.
Baker did add that redshirt freshman Trey Martin, a transfer from Harding University, has also looked good in practice this week and will see action against Huntingdon. Martin did not play against Webber for medical reasons.
"Trey deserves to get a chance to play," Baker said. "He's worked hard and is healthy now, so he'll get his shot in the game. And then we'll see who has the hot hand."
Faulkner (1-0) worked Thursday on polishing its game plan for Huntingdon (1-0), which has won the only two meetings between the two schools. Baker knows the task at hand Saturday afternoon is a tall one. The game kicks off at 1 p.m. at Huntingdon's Samford Stadium and can be heard on WLWI-AM 1440.
"Any time you face a team coached by Mike Turk, you know you're facing a team that doesn't make mistakes and is fundamentally sound," Baker said. "In watching them on film, they're never out of place. They've won a game already too, and their program is used to winning. We know we have an incredible challenge in front of us, and we'll find out real soon if we're up to it."
