Eagles fall on the road

JACKSON, Miss. -- Faulkner committed six turnovers as the Eagles lost to Belhaven College 49-24 on Saturday.

    The Eagles dropped to 0-5 overall and 0-3 in Mid-South Conference play.

    Faulkner's Dominique Johnson recovered a fumble on the opening kickoff.

    The Eagles took ad vantage on a 6-play, 39-yard drive, capped off by Jurell Williams' 2-yard run to give Faulkner its first lead of the season. Paul Cink's PAT gave the Eagles a 7-0 lead.

    Later in the first quarter, Phillip Moore threw a 78-yard touch down pass to Frankie Padula, but it was called back due to an illegal block.

    Padula had five catches for a school-record 111 yards.

    Belhaven (1-4, 1-1) bounced back when Jarred Wallace threw a 27-yard TD pass to Barry Johnson with 6:49 left in the first quarter to cut the lead to 7-6.

    A Faulkner punter bobbled the snap and was tackled in the end zone with 5:13 left as the Blazers took an 8-7 lead and never looked back.

    "I was proud of the way our guys played in the second half," Eagles head coach Jim Nichols said. "We made too many mistakes to have a chance in the game. Obviously, when you have a touchdown called back that could've given you a 14-0 lead, it changes your thinking and it just went bad from there."

    Wallace's touchdown passes to Ricardo Bol ton, Anthony Embry and Johnson, along with a 7-yard run by Quinton Taylor, gave the Blazers a 39-9 lead in the middle of the sec ond quarter and a 49-17 lead at halftime.

    The Eagles got a safety when Kyle Henry was called for intentional grounding in the end zone at the end of the second quarter.

    Moore threw a 28-yard TD pass to Wil liams and Eagles' back up quarterback David Jones threw a 9-yard pass to Williams in the second half.

    The Eagles host Cum berland at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
