Nichols Working to Get Players In Place
August 19, 2008
With the quality of Monday’s practice at such a high level, repeating that for a second day is a difficult feat; yet Jim Nichols’s Faulkner University Eagles did just that with their practice on Tuesday.
"We had another good practice, just like yesterday," commented Nichols. "Everyone looked really good. We worked on our offense and we put some new plays into our system."
As the Eagles prepare to start using their scout team tomorrow for September’s meeting with the Bulldogs of Samford University, Coach Nichols and his staff are constantly trying to put the second year program in the best position for a winning season.
"We are still working on deciding who some of our position players will be," said Nichols. One of those positions is the important spot of linebacker. Nichols said he and his staff plan on trying out running back Matt Fleck from Tallahassee, Florida to see if he can stop the ball as well as he runs it.
"Matt is hard working and is a really good running back, but we want to see how he would do as a linebacker because of his speed and toughness. Matt is a good kid and a smart player. You have to be two to three men deep at line backer so we are going to give Matt a shot and see what happens."
"I feel like you need to try to get your best athletes on the field any way you can," Nichols concluded. "That’s how we are going to be successful."
The Eagles begin the 2008 campaign at NCAA Division-I Samford on September 6 at 6pm. The home portion of the season gets started on September 13 as the Eagles play host to Huntingdon College at the Cramton Bowl; kickoff is slated for 7pm.
