West Virginia Tech holds off Faulkner 26-14
October 31
MONTGOMERY, W. Va. - Faulkner turned in perhaps its most productive offensive showing of the season, but seven turnovers spelled doom for the Eagles in a 26-14 loss to West Virginia Tech in a Mid-South Conference battle here Saturday afternoon.
The Eagles (1-8, 0-5 MSC) had 329 yards of total offense - 149 on the ground and 180 through the air - but couldn't shake the mistakes that ultimately led to their eighth consecutive loss. The Golden Bears (3-6, 1-4 MSC) finished with 413 total yards and ended a six-game slide with the victory.
West Virginia Tech led 13-0 at the half - recovering a Trey Martin fumble in the end zone for its first touchdown and scoring on a 31-yard strike from Michael Scott to Josh Humphrey for its second. The Eagles, who had only 75 yards of offense in the first half, came to life in the second.
Faulkner marched 43 yards on five plays for a touchdown on its first possession of the third quarter. The score came with a bit of trickery, with wideout Deonta Allen taking a pitch on an end around, then passing 27 yards to Bobby Britton in the end zone. Jared Corder kicked the point after, and the Eagles were to within 13-7 with 12:53 to play in the third.
The Golden Bears answered right back, marching 72 yards on seven plays, with Scott finding Humphrey again from seven yards out for the score. The extra point pushed the West Virginia Tech lead back to 20-7 with 10:25 left on the third quarter clock.
Faulkner backup quarterback Joe Scott, in for the injured Martin, directed a five-play, 77-yard drive to bring the Eagles close again late in the third quarter. Scott found wide receiver Leslie James for 35 and 31 yards on back-to-back plays, then Brandon Cheatham powered in from the 7 for the touchdown. Corder's kick cut the Golden Bear lead to 20-14 headed to the fourth quarter.
The final quarter wasn't kind however, with the Eagles turning it over four times to end any chances for a comeback. The second turnover - an interception by Gary Joshway at the Eagles' 44 - set up West Virginia Tech's final touchdown that put the game out of reach. Scott finished off the nine-play drive with a quarterback keeper from the 1.
Faulkner plays at Bethel Saturday night. The game kicks off at 7.
