Shorter started the second half on a 12-3 run and held off a late Faulkner rally to escape Tine Davis Gymnasium with a 56-51 Southern States Athletic Conference victory Thursday night over the Eagles.

Faulkner (12-9, 4-6 SSAC) scored the final six points of the first half to take a 34-30 lead at intermission. The final 20 minutes, however, were a struggle for the Eagles, scoring only 17 points while committing 14 turnovers. Once the Hawks grabbed the lead – on a Qav Waddell putback with 16:29 to play – they never trailed again.

With Shorter up 52-42 with 7:28 left Faulkner made one final push, scoring eight straight points to cut the margin to 52-50 with 2:23 left. The Hawks withstood the rally, making three of their last four free throws and surviving a potential game-tying three-point attempt by Faulkner’s Reggie Dupree with 5 seconds left. A.J. Martin’s two free throws provided Shorter’s final margin.

“It’s very frustrating,’’ Faulkner head coach Jim Sanderson said. “I think our guys played hard, and played well in spurts, we just didn’t finish around the basket enough and turned it over too much. We just have a lot of work to do and that’s exactly what we’re gonna do – get back to work.’’
