Randell Moore and Josh Gholston sparked a 12-2 late second half run as Faulkner broke open a close game and raced to an 88-80 victory over 25th-ranked Crichton Thursday night at Tine Davis Gymnasium.

Faulkner (11-8) had seen a 13-point second half lead evaporate into a one-point deficit with 5:48 left before Gholston buried a long three and Moore followed with a conventional three-point play of his own to spark the Eagle run. Gholston’s two free throws pushed the lead to an insurmountable 81-69 with 1:40 left. The closest the Comets (14-5) would get the rest of the way was the final margin of 8.

“I told our guys that when we play well and get after it, we can compete with anyone on our schedule,’’ Faulkner head coach Jim Sanderson said. “We shot the ball well tonight, and I thought for the most part we handled their press well. I’m proud of our guys for the effort.’’

Faulkner shot 60 percent in the decisive second half and 51 percent for the game. Crichton, which came into the game outrebounding its opponents by 12 a game, did win the board battle, but only by 34-33. And the Eagles forced 21 Crichton turnovers.

The Eagles trailed in the early minutes of the game but took control midway through the half behind the inside play of Moore. Faulkner led 39-31 at the half.

Moore led Faulkner with 27 points and six rebounds, while Gholston added 23. Reggie Dupree added 14 and Oneil Mangal 11 for the Eagles. Memphis transfer Andre Allen paced Crichton with 19 points. Johnny McLawhorn had 15, Marqueys Brown 14, Jerranda Wheeler 12 and Jared Strode 11 for the Comets.
