Hot-shooting Emmanuel nips Faulkner

January 17

Emmanuel shot 65 percent in the final 20 minutes and erased a nine-point second half deficit en route to a 80-77 victory over Faulkner in a Southern States Athletic Conference game at Tine Davis Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.

In the closing minute, missed Emmanuel free throws gave Faulkner a chance. Trailing by three, Josh Gholston missed a three-point attempt with 9 seconds left. The Lions’ Chase Procuro rebounded but was called for traveling with 3 seconds on the clock. Reggie Dupree missed Faulkner’s last chance to tie at the buzzer.

While the Lions were hot after intermission the Eagles were not, converting just 41 percent of their second-half shots. Faulkner, which led 42-35 at halftime, also struggled again from the free-throw line, making only 10 of 24 attempts. It was the Eagles’ fifth consecutive SSAC loss.

“In the second half we just didn’t play well,’’ Faulkner coach Jim Sanderson said. “We need to go back to work and get some things worked out.’’

Faulkner (10-8, 3-5 SSAC) was paced by the double-double from junior forward Randell Moore, who finished with 27 points and 12 rebounds. Dupree added 10 for the Eagles. Emmanuel (11-6, 4-4 SSAC) had five players in double figures, with Tedrick Hudson leading the way with 18. Ben Brim and Shawn Courtney had 16 apiece, while Jaeves McLendon had 11 and Chase Procuro 10.
