Faulkner survived a poor free-throw shooting night by hitting seven of its last nine down the stretch to hold off Reinhardt 78-70 Thursday night in a Southern States Athletic Conference game at Tine Davis Gymnasium.

    The Eagles (7-3, 3-0 SSAC) led only 67-64 with 2:57 left, but Randell Moore and Fred Foster helped keep Reinhardt (4-4, 1-1 SSAC) at bay with three free throws apiece in the final minutes. Faulkner shot a whopping 47 free throws in the game, making only 27. The Eagles trailed for a total of only 2:17 seconds in the game, and won despite committing 27 turnovers.

     “It sure wasn’t pretty,’’ said Faulkner head coach Jim Sanderson, whose Eagles held Reinhardt to only 37 percent shooting from the field. “We had some guys step up and hit big free throws when we had to have them, and that certainly saved us. We’ll have to play much better than we did tonight if we want to be successful in our league.’’

     Faulkner led most of the way, but could never shake the pesky visitors. The Eagles biggest lead in the game was eight, and they held a 33-30 advantage at halftime. Faulkner was paced by Randell Moore’s 19 points and six rebounds, while Reggie Dupree and Josh Gholston each added 11. Reinhardt got 15 points from Quinton Spivey, 14 from Shawn Davis and 10 each from Mario Mason and Kordel Alexander.
