100 Inning Game

Every year, just like their Major League counterparts, the Faulkner University Eagles baseball team looks forward to the month of October. To the Eagles October not only means that they are one month closer to starting their season, but it also means that it is time for the annual 100- inning game.

The Faulkner University coaching staff established the 100-inning game last year as a fundraiser for the baseball program. Each player sends out letters to family and friends to solicit donations for the 100-inning game. These donations go right back to the athlete to help pay for equipment. The 100-inning game also allows the parents of the athletes an opportunity to see them compete on the field before the spring season.

Some might be wondering, “How can you play a 100-inning game?” The 100-inning game is not accomplished in one day. In fact the Eagle Baseball coaching staff set aside the entire week of October 17th – 22nd to complete the process. The game is comprised of five different teams. These teams are selected by the fifteen Eagle Baseball seniors who also serve as the coaches of each team. After the teams are selected, the coaching staff sets up two round robin style tournaments. One tournament consists of intrasquad live-arm games, while the other is an intrasquad of machine pitch games. The teams with the best records go on to play in the championship games held on Saturday October 22.

The only question left to answer is who will come out on top this year. Head Coach Andy Priola says, “The guys in the bullpen are already talking it up about who’s going to win and who’s going to lose.” The competition is fierce, and at the end of the week we will see which team will have the bragging rights until next year.
