Eagles bury the Badgers

Montgomery, Ala. - Faulkner took on Spring Hill College in a doubleheader yesterday hoping to improve on the season’s 3-0 start. The Eagles jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in game one and though the Badgers fought back in the fourth and fifth innings, the Eagles were able to push forward for the 7-4 win. Game two was all Eagles. Faulkner was able to put 10 runs up in just three innings and held on to the shutout sealing the victory in the fifth inning.

Senior pitcher Jordan Cowart started game one for the Eagles. Cowart struck out four batters over four innings before junior Jud Harper came to the mound. Harper struck out two batters over two innings and allowed only two runs. Junior Austin Adams finished the seventh inning for the pitching crew and added a strike out.

The Eagles dominated at the plate once again. Junior Kevin Leslie was 2-for-4 including a solo shot over the left field wall to open the game. Austin Adams was 3-for-4 and knocked in two runs and scored twice as well. Other notable performances were contributed by junior Jose Morillo who was 2-for-2 and freshman Kevin Villarreal who was 2-for-3.

Faulkner continued the onslaught in game two blistering the Badgers quickly. The Eagles put up three points in the first inning, four in the second and three more in the third. The rapid scoring was sustained by two home runs. Jose Morillo hit a three-run shot and senior Brandon Reed added a two-run banger. Junior Kevin Leslie didn’t contribute a home run in game two, but did go 2-for-2 at the plate and scored a pair of runs. Austin Adams had another stellar performance at the plate hitting 2-for-2 with three RBIs. Sophomore Chris Myles was also 2-for-2 with an RBI and sophomore Jonathan Gober was 2-for-3. Junior Ryan Chase allowed only two runs in five innings while striking out five batters.

The Eagles have jumped out to a 5-0 start this season and will face a tough opponent this weekend. Faulkner will host Cumberland University in a three game series beginning Friday. Cumberland is ranked No. 8 in the NAIA preseason poll after finishing 48-20 last season. The first game is scheduled for Friday at 2 p.m. at Harrison Field followed by a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at noon.
