Freshman Experience

        Dr. Terry Brown

Professor of Physical Education

I like to remember my freshman experience class many years ago. I knew no one, and was about 1500 miles from home. By the end of the week I had, if not deep friendships, at least good acquaintances and was ready to start school. If we can accomplish that and sneak in some study/survival skills, we have had a great week!

As I reflect on college for my three boys and their first days at their respective Universities, I realize how essential the first few days of experiences are.It is essentail that  students smake a positive contact whether it is another student or a person on the faculty or staff. It may be the only time that students are informed about the major differences between high school and universitiy life in and out of the classroom. It is a time where I can truly exhibit what I wish to be to our student--a servant. That is difficult to communicate once class begins and I have to hold to standards.

I believe FE is a wonderful opportunity for new students to get adjusted to college life and most importantly they get to know other new students before classes ever begin. Many great friendships are developed at FE.

Freshman experience gives students a somewhat relaxed opportunity to transition to college life.  It is personally rewarding to be part of that experience and to be able to see students experience a week which begins a new chapter of their lives.  In my view, students are better equipped to begin college because of Freshman experience thru such activities as the needs and abilities assesments surveys,  the study tools given in presentations throughout the week, and the friendships which have developed from our week together.

I believe that Freshman Experience is a wonderful learning experience for the students and teachers.  It gives both the students and faculty an opportunity to embrace the Christian environment and philosophy of Faulkner University .

I teach during Freshmen Experience because I want to help our new students adjust to this major change in their life. Our Freshman Experience Program does an excellent job in helping our freshman adjust to their new surroundings and get them started on the right foot in their pursuit of a college degree.

Dr. Ed Hicks

Professor of History and Political Science

I enjoy teaching in the freshman experience program because I like to meet and get the know the new students and encourage them to get involved quickly in the educational opportunities available here at Faulkner.  Unfortunately, many incoming freshman don’t know what to expect from college life and getting off to a good start in the classroom is extremely important and I want to do everything I can to get these new students off on the right foot.

I love Freshman Experience week and hope that when my children enter college similar programs will be available for them.  This week helps everyone transition from high school, junior colleges and other universities into Faulkner university.  It's a lot of work but I keep returning because we have so much fun!

With our emphasis on service at Faulkner University, this is one of the best ways to say who we really are.  I really enjoy working with thers all week long to help orient new students to Faulkner.
