Welcome to the Faulkner University Department of Fine Arts

(Faulkner University Chorus "An Evening of Coronation Music" Performed in conjunction with the Montgomery Symphomy Orchestra)

A welcome From The Department Chairman

Dr. Matt Roberson

Greetings from Faulkner University’s Fine Arts Department!  If you are a prospective student, I encourage you to explore our website to get to know us better and to see the exciting programs we offer in music and theatre.  Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have or if you would like to plan a visit.  To members of the community, I invite you to peruse our calendar of performances and schedule an enjoyable evening at our Dinner Theatre.  Dinner Theatre auditions are open to the community, and we have listed audition dates on the schedule.  Finally, our chorus often performs locally, and we welcome the community to attend.

Our Philosophy

The first image we have of God in Genesis is that of God as creator.  When he created man in His own image, then, He created us to be creators as well.  The product of God’s creation is, of course, creation itself; the products of human creation we call “art,” a term that encompasses a variety of creative activities, including the performing arts—music, dance, and theatre.  We believe that God implanted in humanity a yearning to create and that fulfilling this need is vital for a healthy life.  The arts should thus be a central component in education at all levels, rather than being relegated to the periphery.

Unfortunately, as with any endeavor, humans often use the arts to convey unbiblical ideologies.  We, however, above all else, want to cultivate Christian artists not only by providing a caring, Christian environment, but also by encouraging students to develop a Christian worldview in general and a Christian philosophy of the arts in particular.

The Fine Arts Department

We offer degrees in music, theatre, and music theatre.  Our Dinner Theatre stages seven shows each season (at least three of which are musicals) with twenty performances of each show.  This provides our students with an unusually large number of performance opportunities in a semi-professional environment.  With the potential of playing as many as twenty-eight roles over a four-year career, as well gaining experience in directing, managing, design and construction, our students’ résumés are often impressive.  In addition to the success of mounting two consecutive sold-out seasons in the Dinner Theatre, our students swept the statewide KCACTF competition, winning Best Director, Best Playwright, and Best Actor.  Our music area is growing rapidly.  The Chorus recently performed a concert featuring the music of Mozart and Handel with members of the Montgomery Symphony, and they were accepted into the 2007 ACDA festival in Birmingham.  This summer the chorus will be touring England and Scotland on a mission trip.  If you are interested in the performing arts, please visit us and see what we have to offer.
