Week 1 Define "Argument"; Discuss occasions and kinds of argument. Learn about reading and writing arguments. Intellectual property, academic integrity & plagiarism. Assessing and using sources. Documenting sources (Chs. 1 & 2 in Perspectives in Argument)
Week 2 Discuss audience and appeals to various types of audience; Arguments from heart and arguments based on values; Issues (Chs. 3 & 4). Project 1 due.
Week 3 Arguments based on character, facts and reason; Toulmin arguments; Rogerian arguments (Chs. 5 & 10)
Week 4 Arguments of definition and evaluations; Causal arguments and proposals; Humorous arguments (Chs 6 & 7). Project 2 due
Week 5Figurative language, visual arguments, arguments in the electronic environment; Spoken arguments (Chs. 8 & 9)
Week 6 Evidence, fallacies; Begin work on research paper (Chs. 11 - 13) Project 3 due.
Week 7 Research paper
Week 8 Portfolio due, Research paper due and final exam.
