Retention in the Teacher Education Program

Retention in the Program

An admitted candidate who does not continue to meet program requirements is placed on probation.

To remain in the teacher education program and receive a Class B Certification, a candidate must meet the following requirements:

  • Completion of the approved program with at least a 2.50 grade point average on all work in professional education.
  • Completion of 1000 hours of documented and approved clinical experience.
  • Demonstration of readiness and ability to teach during the internship.
  • Post a passing score on the Praxis II test covering content of the teaching field(s) and professional education.
  • Submission of documentation to the Alabama SDE necessary for a criminal background investigation.

Note: No grade below a "C" in professional studies may be used to meet certification requirements. Alabama State Department of Education policies and university policies must be followed in calculation of GPA and awarding of credit for courses taken and courses repeated. SDE policies will supercede university policies.

Specific information regarding the Teacher Education Program and the Internship may be found in the Teacher Education Handbook and the Internship Handbook. Both handbooks are also available in the Education Office in Johnson Hall.
