Informatics: Making Technology Simple

If you enjoy the study of relationships between systems, data, and people, then Informatics may be your field.  Informatics includes an investigation of policies and procedures that optimize the organization, flow, and storage of information in the 21st century.  Courses cover topics in information behavior, organization, design, and evaluation; web page usability; and, research methods and strategies.

A comparison with related fields:

Informatics focuses on the study of social impact that technology has on people and the development of new uses for technology.  It emphasizes the application of new technologies within the context of another discipline.

Computer Science, by contrast, is a more formal, theoretical, and technical discipline, and is structured in a way that supports in-depth and systematic study of algorithmic processes – their theory, analysis, design, efficiency, application and implementation.  Students study mathematical foundations of computer science, computer organization and architecture, telecommunications and computer networks, operating systems, and the design and analysis of algorithms implemented using programming languages.  Additionally, students have a substantial depth and breadth in mathematics and physics.

Information Systems (and Technology) differs as the focus is on applications of computing and communication technologies to the challenges that face business and strengthen global economy.  It provides a broad survey of computer hardware, software, systems analysis and design, database management, and business telecommunications.  In addition, students build a strong foundation in accounting, economics, management, finance, and marketing.
