The Instructional Support Lab,located in room 405 of Linda Y. Brooks Hall, offers learning resources to all Faulkner students. The lab’s fourteen computers have internet access and are available to students for computer-based tutoring, research and typing writing assignments.
Free tutoring in math (remedial math through Calculus) is provided by the Instructional Support Lab’s qualified math instructors. Patricia Phillips, Instructional Support Lab Director, and Kathy Walker, math tutor, both hold degrees in math education and have served as adjunct instructors in Faulkner's Mathematics Department. Students may schedule weekly appointments with a math tutor or may receive help without an appointment provided a tutor is available. Video and computer-based instruction is also available for use in the Instructional Support Lab, and some instructional software may be checked out overnight.
The Writing Center, housed in the Instructional Support Lab, is staffed with qualified peer tutors and English instructors who provide free writing skills instruction. Mr. Andrew Jacobs, Writing Center Director and instructor of English, received a master of Liberal Arts degree from Auburn University in Montgomery and is currently teaching classes in remedial English and English Composition at Faulkner University. The Writing Center’s peer tutors are recommended by the English Department and must have excellent writing and communication skills. All students requesting writing assistance may schedule appointments on a weekly basis.
The Instructional Support Lab also serves as a testing center for make-up tests, placement tests, and CLEP exams. Make-up tests are administered to students by lab personnel upon the instructor’s request. During College Bound Weekends and at the beginning of each semester, placement tests are offered to all incoming freshmen. Computer-based CLEP tests are administered twice monthly on Friday afternoon from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and are available to the general public as well as all Faulkner students.
